In the past,
people believed that wrinkled fingers were caused by water being absorbed by the skin. However, due to our hand's solid waterproof feature, it was discovered that this was not the case.
More recently, it has been discovered that wrinkled fingers are caused by the nervous system in our body. When our body comes into contact with water, our brain sends a signal to our fingers to create wrinkles. Scientists theorize that this phenomenon aids in gripping objects more securely and prevents slipping. Since being in water makes our hands slippery, these wrinkles are essential. It becomes significantly more challenging to hold onto surfaces like pool walls or beach balls without wrinkles. Scientists also note that all primates can develop wrinkles. I find it somewhat odd that wrinkled fingers are a result of the nervous system. I had always believed there was another reason beyond just enhancing grip strength. However, understanding that gripping is the intended purpose is enlightening. It's fascinating to learn that many other primates exhibit similar abilities. The nervous system plays a crucial role in our bodily functions.
